The Protestation was initiated by the House of Commons during the reign of Charles I as an oath of loyalty
at the time of political crisis prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. The aim of the Protestation was to drum up
loyalty to the Church of England, the King, Parliament, and the lawful rights and liberties of subjects. Six hundred
and eight names are listed on the return for the Borough of St Albans.

The names listed appear in a poll book relating to the parliamentary election in St Albans in February 1689/90.
These lists were transcribed by the Seventeenth Century Population Research Group of the Society.
The Group’s database contains biographical details about many of the people listed in these two documents.
Family trees have been drawn up for most surnames.
