Life in St Albans during the First World War

From January 2013 twenty or so members of the Society have been researching what life was like for those who stayed behind in St Albans during the First World War. Our goal was to publish a book considering our findings. This was published in September 2016.

As our research has developed we have published short articles here that give an overview of life in the city in those tough days and also details of events in which the group has been involved.

Several other articles based on our research have also been published in local history journals as follows:

  • 'The Role of the St Albans City Military Service Tribunal in the First World War', Jonathan Mein and Anne Wares, Herts Past and Present, Spring 2013, pp. 19-24
  • 'The St Albans Citizen Army in World War One: the Volunteer Training Corps', Maggy Douglas, Herts Past and Present, Autumn 2014, pp. 22-26
  • 'The War Shrine Movement in Herts, 1916-18', Jonathan Mein and Gareth Hughes, Herts Past and Present, Autumn 2016, pp. 3-8
  • 'New Barnes Mill in the First World War', Val Argue, Park Street & Frogmore Society Journal, Autumn 2016
  • 'The War Shrine Movement in St Albans, 1914-22', Jonathan Mein, Alban Link, Spring 2017, pp. 8-11
