Kingsbury Barn
The Kingsbury Barn site in Branch Road includes an important 14th century aisled manorial barn (not a tithe barn),
a 17th century barn, and a 20th century Art Deco office building. The complex was leased from the Gorhambury Estates
for many years as a dairy distribution depot but when the lease expired the property was sold.
In 2006 the barns were bought by the owners of the neighbouring Kingsbury Manor and planning permission was
granted for the development of residential units on the rest of the site. Work is proceeding and Simon West, Keeper of Field
Archaeology at Verulamium Museum, is involved in negotiations about the underlying archaeology.
The Society of St Michael's and Kingsbury
is keenly interested in the Barns and their website holds past and current issues of the
St Michael's Village Newsletter.
These include up to date articles about the site and contributions by Mr & Mrs Singer, who now own the barns.
There is also a technical description by the late Adrian Gibson,
an expert on timber framed buildings.
Planning application no. 5/2007/1837 can be inspected at the District Council offices
or on
the Councils' planning website.
