Old Toll Gate, London Road

This tollgate stood at the junction of London Road and Old London Road.

St Albans' tollgate charges were abolished in 1871, by which time the coach traffic had been reduced significantly by the growth of the railways and the toll gates cost more to run than they earned. This tollgate was removed around 1890.

Was this gate anything to do with the Mile House at the corner of Milehouse Lane, where we now live.?

No, the name defines the distance of the original building from a datum point in the Town. However, it has raised some interesting points. In the 17th Cent. St Peter's Churchwardens' accounts there are several references to corpses being brought from the Mile House to the church and to people who died at Hugh Thornton's. He was a farrier/constable of Tyttenhanger so it is conceivable that it was the same site. An intriguing little story I hope to follow up because. although the original building was lost in later alterations, which are now demolished, it will be a pity if this historic site is not recorded.
