The Society was founded in 1707 for "the encouragement, advancement and furtherance of the study and knowledge of the antiquities and history of this and other countries". It maintains a library and a museum, has an active programme of lectures and publications, and makes grants for research.

It also publishes SALON (The Society of Antiquaries of London On-line Newsletter)
