LOOK! ST ALBANS... Inspired by the past. Picture your future!

A public consultation by the St Albans City Centre Steering Group

Donald Munro

As is reported in the Newsletter, SAHAAS through Mike Cooper and Donald Munro, have been involved in a broadly based St Albans City Centre Steering Group putting together with the Prince's Foundation for Building Community a major St Albans planning initiative.

This is a real opportunity for St Albanians to influence design standards for St Albans developments. It is running through February 2012.

Final programme details are still being completed, but Leaflets and Posters publicising and detailing ways of participation in the initiative are being distributed. It has also already had very positive local press coverage.

The climax of the initiative will be the meetings on:

27 February 7.00pm
Public Open Session,
Dagnall Street Baptist Church

28-29 February
Invitee workshops

29 February 7.00pm
Public Presentation outlining the principles informing the Design Codes document

1. Photographs of buildings and spaces. Arc & Arc members can participate by uploading to a Flicker webpage Photographs that could serve as good - or bad - examples for future development in the city centre. The publicity leaflet gives you an idea of what is wanted. The output Design Codes document will be substantially a visual guide, so it is important that very good examples (from wherever) are fed into the process as potential models. You can load in up to 7 pictures per person. For instructions on how to do this go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/lookstalbans.
2. Leaflet distribution. Help is needed. Beyond this email circular and at the Library, the Arc & Arc has no ready structure for distribution of publicity. If any members feel able to leaflet in their localities, or are willing to spend an hour or so publicly leafleting on Market Days please let me know as soon as possible. I will liaise with other groups to avoid unnecessary duplication of effort.
3. Specialist architectural and planning input. If any member has relevant experience and/or well developed views about the direction of future central St Albans development, please get in touch with Mike Cooper or myself so that we can ensure these views are fed into the mix at the workshop meetings.

The other groups involved (many of whose logos can be seen on the leaflets) include the Civic Society, the Cathedral, the Chamber of Commerce, St Albans Retail Forum, Hertfordshire Association of Architects, and numerous St Albans Residents Associations.

Councillors and staff from the SADC, are very positive about the exercise, and the highly participative element involved in producing the Design codes document.

The Design codes will not in itself be a statutory planning document, but it will be a major reference point for future development in the City Centre.

So the better the input, the better the outcome.

SADC will of course need to do considerable further work on what is produced from the workshops, before they can become a formally adopted document, but they would be looking to incorporate materials from the Design codes in a Supplementary Planning Document (to the Local Plan) to be written by the themselves.

I hope that many SAHAAS members will be able to participate and contribute ideas.

Please let me know if you can help.
