In 1891 the Black Lion pub was occupied by George Slaughter aged 60 who was a Licensed Victualler born in Rickmansworth, Herts. His wife Louise aged 52 is not marked as having any occupation she was born in St. Albans. There are no children living with them but they do have a general domestic servant Annie Hedges aged 16 and three boarders :
John Harding aged 40 is an agricultural Labourer, Harry Cordel aged 27 is also an Agricultural Labourer and Sarah Cottling a 72 year old widowed char woman.
