Victorian St Albans

At the beginning of the Victorian era in the 1840s, St Albans was a small market town, whose relative importance was declining as other county towns attracted industrial and residential development. But by the time Queen Victoria died in 1901, the fortunes of St Albans, now formally a city, had been transformed.
