NEW DATES - Exhibition: The forgotten battle of St Albans
March 30, 2023 - June 25, 2023 at St Albans Museum + Gallery
This spring SAHAAS and St Albans Museums bring you the first exhibition on the second War of the Roses battle, which remains largely forgotten. Fought in St Albans over 500 years ago on 17 February 1461, it was one of the largest battles in the conflict. The Lancastrian victory should have enabled them to win the war, but their failure to capture London and a shattering defeat a month later, led to a Yorkist monarchy and ultimately Richard III – thus the battle at St Albans was forgotten.
The exhibition delves into the site, motives, tactics and aftermath of the battle, including the looting of the city. The story unfolds through a range of exhibits, detailed replicas revealing the nature of medieval warfare and real artefacts including the second oldest cannonball known in England, found on the battlefield site. Free entry until the end of June 2023.
