HALH Symposium: Wining and Dining in Hertfordshire

The Hertfordshire Association for Local History’s 43rd Annual Symposium will take place at the Katherine Warington School, Harpenden, on Saturday 19 November, 10am to 4pm. This year’s theme is ‘Wining and Dining in Hertfordshire’.
The speakers will be:
John Broad: ‘Bread and Ale: the barley trade and the growing of grain’
Malcolm Thick: (Zoom talk) ‘William Ellis and Hertfordshire food and recipes’
Sue Flood: ‘Carrington: A hospitable farmer: Feasting and Society, 1798-1812’
Sheila White: ‘Eighteenth-century parish workhouse fare’
Richard Simons: ‘Village butchers in the early 19th century’
Heather Falvey: ‘Cucumbers, curry and doughnuts: some of Elizabeth Dimsdale’s recipes’
Jon Mein: ‘Dining in Hertfordshire’s “improved pubs”, 1880-1940’
Philip Sheail: ‘Wining and Dining with the Herts Rifle Volunteers in the 1860s’
Tickets are £15 for association members, £18 for non-members, and include tea and coffee during the day. A buffet lunch will also be available at £7 per head, to be ordered in advance when purchasing tickets. This year, for the first time, the association is making tickets available to order online through Eventbrite where you will be able to pay securely by card, PayPal or Google Pay. There is no need to print off entry or lunch tickets as we will have a record of your order. The last day for ordering lunch online is 4 November; any tickets ordered after that date will be for entry only. The deadline for ordering entry tickets online is 17 November.
