Church and Zoom
Speaker: Prof. Stephen Rose
Discover the music heard in Hertfordshire in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries from the psalms sung in parish churches, to the music lessons given to families in the county’s great houses. This talk will show how records in Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies can be investigated to unlock the musical lives of the county’s inhabitants in past centuries.
Stephen Rose is a professor and Head of Music at Royal Holloway, University of London. His research examines music from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries in relation to social history and book history. He is currently leading a project ‘Music, Heritage, Place: Unlocking the Musical Collections of England’s County Record Offices’, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
