Fund-raising lecture: Not just a favourite - the formidable Sarah Duchess of Marlborough
August 30, 2022 7:45 PM - 9:00 PM at Zoom
Speaker: Dr John Morewood
Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, was the most talked about, and influential, woman of her day. Through films such as The Favourite, Sarah is now remembered as the close friend of Queen Anne. In this talk we will look at other aspects of Sarah and discover how from comparatively impoverished beginnings, through determination and ability, she amassed a fortune which today is almost impossible to quantify.
We will consider her role as a determined politician, courted by all political parties who she never flinched from attacking if she felt they were not acting in Britain’s best interests. We will also look at her influence on St Albans, her native town, and her importance to the career of her husband, one of Britain’s greatest military commanders, which led to her becoming not only Duchess of Marlborough, but also Princess of Mindelheim and Countess of Nellenburg in the Holy Roman Empire.
Dr John Morewood, our speaker, is President of the St Albans and Hertfordshire Architectural and Archaeological Society.
Tickets for this talk cost £8.00 with net receipts in aid of the campaign to install blue plaques celebrating influential inhabitants of St Albans. The cost of producing each plaque is £550.
