Seminar: Freight traffic on the St Albans turnpike
October 24, 2019 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM at SAHAAS Library, Sandridge Gate Business Centre, Ronsons Way, St Albans, AL4 9XR
Speaker: Fabian Hiscock
The turnpike through St Albans was a nationally important strategic route to the north west and to Ireland. A great deal of attention has been paid to the passenger traffic, especially the coaches, passing along it. But the role of the freight carriers, both national and local, was at least equally important to the national economy as they connected London to the industrial Midlands and north. The people involved in this traffic, how it affected St Albans and how it changed as the canal came through to the west and the railway began to have effect will be explored.
