Seminar: The Poor Law in St Albans, 1895 to 1914
March 19, 2020 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM at SAHAAS Library, Sandridge Gate Business Centre, Ronsons Way, St Albans, AL4 9XR
This seminar was postponed from September 2019.
Speaker: Tony Dolphin
Academic research suggests the way the Poor Law dealt with the poor in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries varied widely across England. This project explores how outcomes in St Albans fit into the wider picture. It finds that some groups of paupers were treated much better than others and argues that this was due to the way the Poor Law was interpreted and implemented locally by the Poor Law Guardians.
