Property records

Legal documents and sales particulars significant for the history of landholding in the district
At present these are arranged in two discrete groups.
Deeds Collection
From the 1970s onwards, the Society has received various property deeds and legal papers relating to St Albans (and some from the district) from both individuals and firms of solicitors. It represents an important collection for those studying the history of the city from the 16th century onwards. Handlist by Susan Bellamy.
Sales Particulars
This collection, principally from the Beardsmore Gift, contains over 200 sets of particulars largely from the 19th and 20th centuries. Most relate to St Albans and district although there are some for other parts of Hertfordshire. Handlist by Ros Trent.
These handlists fully record these records for the first time. All the documents are available to view in the Society’s library. Please contact us at least three days in advance if you wish to see any of these. (Email library@stalbanshistory.org)
It is intended that the descriptions contained in these handlists will be included in our online library catalogue in due course.
