The Society's 175th Anniversary Online Exhibition

Welcome!

We have been asked to introduce this online guide to the exhibition celebrating the achievements of St Albans and Hertfordshire Architectural and Archaeological Society. We are delighted to do so, not only because of our love for St Albans, but also because our family has been so involved with the ‘Arc and Arc’ since its very earliest times.

James Grimston, 2nd Earl of Verulam, became President of the Society in 1846 and fulfilled this role until his death in 1895. The Society in its obituary stated its success was due to his advice and guidance. ‘Courteous, kind, and always interested in our work he was indeed an ideal President.’

We, his descendants, as Patrons of the Society have tried to follow these principles. As the Society begins its second 175 years we hope it continues with its principles of ‘Discover, Protect, Innovate and Inform’, around which this exhibition is designed, for many years to come.

Exhibition Galleries

The online exhibition is arranged in four themed galleries, each reflecting the achievements of our Society over the first 175 years - Discover, Protect, Innovate and Inform. We hope that you enjoy browsing the exhibits. Do mind the tricky step between the 'Discover' and 'Protect' galleries. If you don't have time to visit all the galleries now, don't worry - you can always come back later.

Many people and organisations have contributed to this exhibition. They include some of our key partners over the last 175 years, and others too numerous to mention. We'd like to thank them all.
