His three year term will expire in 2020. Public lectures of the Society All of the Society's lectures are open to the public, with the regular Autumn and Spring programmes free to members and those under 18, and only £5 for visitors. 2018 Newsletters The 2010s: extending our knowledge of Verulamium's layout Members of the Society enabled a comprehensive survey of the Roman city, using non-invasive techniques, led by Kris Lockyear of the Institute of Archaeology and Welwyn Archaeological Society. The Society's publications The Society's publications cover a wide range of topics, from the First World War street memorials of the Abbey parish, to the old Town Hall, and the work of local architect Percy Blow, which can be seen in many buildings in the city, and in neighbouring towns. The Survival of the Six Bells In early February 1914 the Six Bells was under threat of closure. In cities like St Albans, there were too many pubs to meet diminishing customer needs. For example, according to the City police, there was one pub for every 165 people in St Albans in 1901. St Albans Home Front Research Group St Albans Corn Exchange – form and materials Dr Tony Berk discusses the unusual 'white' bricks used in the construction of the Corn Exchange, one of many built around the country following the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846. Straw hat making During the nineteenth century, straw hat making was a a major industry in St Albans. The photos show Kershaw's hat factory and the subsequent redevelopment of the site. Holywell House Holywell House, demolished in 1837, was said to be the favourite residence of Sara, Duchess of Marlborough. Excavation at the Old Bakery, 29 St. Michael's Street Some 60 years after the site was first investigated by volunteers and staff of Verulamium museum, the Old Bakery site ... Dr Norman Davey: rescuing Roman plaster decorations The Verulamium excavations produced a host of interesting and important finds, but some (like plaster wall decorations) were so fragile as to appear beyond rescue. Until, that is, Honorary Society Member Dr Norman Davey tried his hand at a new technique. Clock Tower curios Years after young Zachariah Mountford scratched his initials in the stone of a room in the Clock Tower in 1709, he became a tenant of the building. St Albans performs its past The St Albans pageants of 1907, 1948 and 1953 were typical of the outbreaks of ‘pageant fever’ that afflicted communities across Britain at various times during the twentieth century. EHAS and SAHAAS now jointly produce a scholarly journal of record, Hertfordshire History and Archaeology. Welwyn Archaeological Society The Welwyn Archaeological Society was founded by Tony Rook and is now led by Dr Kris Lockyear of the Institute of Archaeology. SAHAAS volunteers have worked closely with Kris on a county-wide programme of non-invasive archaeological surveys.
