A transcription of the city’s Absent Voters List

For its First World War Home Front research project, members of the Society have recently transcribed the Absent Voters List (AVL) for the city of St Albans for 1918. As the AVL records the names and details of servicemen and some women normally resident in the city but ‘absent’ typically on military service, this transcription has many uses for other local historians as well as genealogists. We have chosen to publish this file to help those who are interested in our predecessors who lived in St Albans at the time.

We are grateful to Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies (HALS), who hold the original version, for permission to make this transcription available on the Society’s website.

While every reasonable effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the transcript, we recommend that, if you find entries of interest, you should apply to HALS for a copy of the original document to confirm our transcription. Copies may be ordered through Hertfordshire Names Online (via www.hertsdirect.org). HALS may be contacted on 0300 123 4049 or hals.enquiries@hertfordshire.gov.uk.
