Many are the curious objects our forebears saw as common place daily tools. David Thorold, curator of St Albans Museum + Gallery, provided SAHAAS with a glimpse of some of them for the website.
November’s mystery object: letter sealing set
Next time you send a billet doux by email, spare a thought for your great grandparents. Not only did they have actually to write the letter, but in the absence of self-adhesive envelopes, they might also have had to seal it, to spare the blushes of the postman.

If they were lucky, they might have received the gift like this charming letter sealing set, complete with wafer seals and a crimping tool.
Next month’s mystery object will be posted on the website on 1 December.
