SAHAAS maps collection

Maps etc from the 1600s to the present day

Donald Munro

This extensive collection includes maps, architectural drawings, auction notices and posters. Highlights are digital and printed copies of the following:

  • Town maps of St Albans (Hare, 1634; Oliver, c.1680; Andrews & Wren, 1766; Godman, 1822)
  • Estate maps (St Germain’s, 1637 & 1692; St Julian’s, 1691)
  • Parish maps (Sandridge, 1726; St Michael’s, 1799; Abbey, 1818; St Peter’s, 1826)
  • Ordnance Survey (1:500 large scale maps of St Albans surveyed c.1879)

A recent acquisition is a set of Goad maps showing retail premises in St Albans town centre from 1968 to 1984. Although the collection is generally focused on St Albans and the immediate district, we have maps of many other parts of Hertfordshire, including a set of Ordnance Survey 6 inches to 1 mile maps for most of the county, ranging in date from the 1930s to 1950s.

Much of our collection is described in the following handlist. Items waiting to be collated include digital copies of the early Victorian tithe maps for the four St Albans parishes as well as Sandridge. We also have a digital copy of a rare map of the town in the late 1850s. All are available to view on computer.

Thanks to Frank Iddiols, Tony Cooper and Jonathan Mein for their help in the preparation of this catalogue.
