The University of Hertfordshire is currently organising an event for summer 2011 which we think may be of interest to local history groups.
On 7th June actors from Twisted Events Theatre Company will be performing some recently discovered plays which were written during World War I and have not been performed since that time. This offers an opportunity to consider the forthcoming centenary of 1914 and the ways in which groups such as your own might be interested in marking the anniversary.
We would like to invite you to participate in a small event preceding the plays to share ideas and encourage collaborations. These ideas might include some recognition of existing memorials, different ways of commemorating the experiences of war, or perhaps putting new markers into the environment such as memorial plaques to certain events or people, trails highlighting particular areas of interest or setting up a web presence.
As well as hearing more information about the plays and how they came to light, we will be offering an opportunity for representatives from different groups to give a 3 minute soapbox presentation on what they have been doing or hope to do, a chance to speak to those who have some experience of the opportunities for funding which exist in different quarters, as well as displays of previous Hertfordshire initiatives such as the De Havilland Beacon.
The event will begin at 4.45p.m., with the play readings beginning at 6.00 and the opportunity to continue the event at the play’s conclusion around 7.15p.m.
Refreshments will be provided and we hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with enthusiasts for the history of the county and its experiences of wartime.
Please contact me if you think that representatives from your group would like to attend. All are welcome, but some rough idea of numbers would be appreciated in order to organise refreshments. You would be welcome for all or part of the event.
Best wishes
