Hertfordshire Parish Registers available online

A boon for local researchers

One of the largest family history data providers, Find My Past, has recently published indexes to and scans of an extensive collection of Hertfordshire’s parish registers. This amounts to nearly 4 million individual records and can be summarised as follows:

  • baptisms – 1538-1910
  • marriages – 1538-1928
  • burials – 1538-1990

This collection also includes the parishes of Chipping and East Barnet and Totteridge which, since 1965, have formed part of the London Borough of Barnet.

There is good, albeit incomplete, coverage of the four St Albans parishes (Ss Albans, Michaels, Peters & Stephens). By contrast the indexes and scans for some local parishes such as Redbourn and Sandridge are mostly limited to the 19th century registers only.

There are still teething problems with the publication. For example, please be wary of the confusing descriptions of the local St Albans parishes in the PDF files on Findmypast’s website.

This collection will be of significant value to many researchers in the Society, in particular the 17th Century Research Group.

To access this material you must have a subscription or have purchased credits from Findmypast. Alternatively, if you are a Hertfordshire library card holder, you may search the collection for free at St Albans Central and most other county libraries.
