The Civic Society of St Albans was founded in 1961 as part of the nationwide civic society movement.
The Society’s aims include:
- fostering a greater awareness of the heritage and amenities of St Albans
- encouraging the highest standard of design in new developments
- campaign for the retention of features which give St Albans its own special character
- contest inappropriate development proposals
- stimulate informed debate amongst residents, developers and the Council.
Since it was formed, both the Civic Society and the SAHAAS have campaigned jointly on several issues related to the architectural heritage of St Albans. The two societies are part of the Blue Plaques initiative to recognise local individuals or organisations of national or international stature, or of outstanding local importance.
The Civic Society and SAHAAS also share responsibility for staffing the Clock Tower (of which the City and District Council is custodian) when it is opened to visitors from Easter to the end of September and on other special occasions.
