The Society’s lecture programme Our lectures cover local, national and international subjects of historic interest as they have done throughout our first 175 years. Then, as now, our presenters comprise a mix of local experts and national figures. The contributions of the Grimston family The Grimston family has been closely associated with the Society since its formation in 1845. The 2nd Earl Verulam served as the Society's President for almost half a century, from 1846 to 1895. The Society’s financial support for preserving buildings in St Albans In seeking to promote the preservation of historic buildings in St Albans, the Society has occasionally contributed towards the cost of repair and restoration, sometimes as a means of encouraging others to do likewise. Sir John Evans: paving the way for Treasure Trove protection Sir John Evans, a Vice President of the Society, developed a standardised approach to the classification of pottery finds, but was particularly enthused by the study of ancient coins, and wrote the then standard work on Iron Age coins. Henry Fowler and the Abbey complex Revd. Henry Fowler, a member of the Society, painstakingly pieced together evidence from measurements and excavations to create a detailed map of the medieval Abbey's wall, gateways, buildings, cemeteries and adjoining properties. Appealing against Conscription, 1915-18 The St Albans City Military Tribunal was set up in 1916 to hear appeals against conscription. SAHAAS wins Newsletter Award In June 2019, the Society has been awarded the annual ‘Award for a Society Newsletter’ by the British Association for Local History Excavation at 8-10 High Street, Wheathampstead An excavation carried out in Wheathampstead in 2019 revealed evidence of considerable development from the mid-12th century onwards To boldly go in the 1800s: early Society excursions By the 1880s, historical excursions were popular with Society members, though they had a serious purpose. The Story of the Abbey School - a nineteenth century National School This history of a National School founded in St Albans in 1848 illustrates the immense task undertaken by philanthropic societies in the mid-nineteenth century to provide a rudimentary education to thousands of children who would otherwise have remained illiterate. Nathaniel Salmon: his history … and Hertfordshire County Histories The Society is delighted to have acquired a book to fill the major lacuna in our Hertfordshire collections. Chris Reynolds has very kindly donated to the Library: Nathaniel Salmon, History of Hertfordshire (1728). This handsome folio volume completes SAHAAS’s holdings of the major histories of Hertfordshire. Books & pamphlets Over 2,200 books and pamphlets are in our current catalogue; this is expected to increase to about 3,000 in the next year or so as recent donations are added. Clock Tower celebrates the Society's 175th anniversary The Clock Tower is an iconic part of the rich heritage of St Albans, so Caroline Howkins, who leads the Society's clock tower team, decided it should form part of the Society's celebrations of its 175th anniversary. Clock Tower model arrives at St Albans Museum + Gallery For several months, Hertfordshire University student Beth Jones laboured to produce a remarkably detailed scale model of St Albans' Clock Tower. Then the pandemic brought the project to a halt. Now at last, Beth Jones' masterpiece has been completed, and is on view as part of the Society's exhibition in the Old Town Hall. Education by Election. Reed's School, Clapton and Watford By Norman Alvey. In 1813 Andrew Reed founded a charity for educating orphans which eventually became Reed’s School. Subscribers to the charity were awarded votes and widows had to lobby for these to gain admission to the school for their children. The Old Town Hall, St Albans By Chris Green.
